MetService has said the worst of the storm predicted to hit Auckland has now passed.

Rain and strong winds will remain throughout the night. Auckland region residents should remain wary of the strong gusts and the effects of this afternoon's weather on Sunday.

The storm has caused damage throughout the top half of the North Island with flooding causing road closures, prolonged power outages, and emergency services attending numerous incidents.

The Auckland Region Emergency Management Office will continue to monitor the situation and work with emergency services and local councils.
